I was intrigued by the Meson de Champinon, a bar restaurant that serverd mushrooms and only mushrooms. They were delicious, as was the authentic sangria which came with the food. The last day was all about cooking, with Pamela and Bill organizing a paella masterclass at the glamorous Ritz Mandarin Oriental. Chef Oliver Menendez guided us through the intricacies of making standard Valencian paella and black rice with squid and lobster. The experience was paired with tastings of regional sherries and white wines, making it one of the trip's highlights.
We settled the weekend with a visit to Teatro Flamenco Madrid. This intimate venue showcased the raw emotion and beauty of flamenco dancing, providing a perfect cultural capstone.
Throughout the trip, we enjoyed memorable meals at regional dining establishments like Casa Verona and Casa Alberto, where we enjoyed authentic Spanish meals such as anchovies in olive oil, croquettes, and even the famous calamari sandwich. The Mercado de San Miguel was another standout, using a look into Spain's abundant cooking traditions.
